Terminology AKC: The American Kennel Club, 5580 Centerview Drive Raleigh,
NC 27606-3390, controls the registration of pure-bred Retrievers in this
country. CKC: Canadian Kennel Club, 2150 Bloor Street West, Toronto,
Ontario M65 4V7. In order to participate in CKC events, American bred dogs
must first be registered with the CKC. NAHRA: North American Hunting Retriever Association was organized
in 1983 “to discover and reward
dogs that can fulfill the hunter’s needs in… actual hunting conditions.”

in 1992 for the sole purpose of hosting a
showcase event for the premier hunt test retrievers in the USA. Blind: A “blind retrieve” is one in which the dog does not
know the location of the bird, but the handler does. The dog is sent out
and controlled completely by the handler’s signals. Sometimes the word “blind”
is used to refer to the bird or dummy used on a blind retrieve. Licensed Trial: A trial, Licensed by the AKC, at which Championship
points are given. Mark: A bird which the dog sees fall. He is expected to remember
the exact position of the fall and to go directly to it when commanded to
do so. National Amateur Retriever
Trial: The trial, for dogs who
have qualified during the previous year, to determine the National Amateur
Champion of that year. Dogs to be handled by amateurs only. National Retriever
Trial (Open): The trial, for
dogs who have qualified during the previous year, to determine the National
Champion of that year. Dogs can be handled by professionals or amateurs.
