Our Puppies

We do not operate a large kennel and usually have only two or three litters of puppies per year. Our females were carefully selected so their offspring poses the looks and natural abilities a Labrador Retriever should have. The sire of our litters are selected to compliment the female and strengthen overall quality.

Our puppies are started on Eukanuba Small Breed Puppy and Science Diet Growth mixed at 3 weeks of age. At 5 weeks of age the puppies are switched to Pro Plan Puppy Lamb & Rice mixed with Science Diet Growth. This gives the new owner a choice of using Pro Plan (Purina) or Science Diet product. We recommend one of the Pro Plan products, either the Puppy Lamb & Rice or Adult Chicken & Rice. We feel that your puppy should be switched to an adult food after 16 weeks of age.

Before our puppies leave for their new homes: 1) the dew claws have been removed, 2) they have received their first vaccination, and 3) a stool sample has been checked for parasites. We recommend that the new owner also take a stool sample with them when they take their new puppy to the vet for a checkup and the next vaccination.

We guarantee our puppies. We will replace or refund the purchase price of the field trial or hunt test quality puppy that has been purchased with a full guarantee against hereditary debilitating hip dysplasia, retinal dysplasia or cataracts, up to 28 months of age. OFA certification can be obtained at 24 months of age. In all cases, we will require that the original puppy be spayed or neutered. This would be at the owner’s expense. Hip dysplasia is thought to be genetic, nutritional and environmental. Remember: A fat puppy is not a healthy puppy! You can help your puppy by feeding a good diet, keeping the puppy trim and watching the excessive pounding and stress on joints during the first year.

Shannondoah Kennels has been breeding, training and competing Labrador Retrievers for over 23 years and believes that we are not in the business of selling puppies, but are in the business of placing puppies in the right environment.
